Enfranchisement in the context of residential property means the right to:

• Collectively buy the freehold of a block of flats; or

• Extend the lease of a flat; or

• Buy the freehold of a leasehold house, or extend the lease of the house.


The right to enfranchise is particularly important when the value of a flat is falling due to the length of the lease or where tenants are keen or need to take control of the management of their block.
